Narrative of Thing

Hasan Baran Kurtoğlu’s narrative paintings are fantasized, often blurred constructs, in which elements from his personal life are transposed into surrealistic or hyperrealistic pastiches. Kurtoğlu achieves a perfect sense of the ephemeral in his hazy, dreamlike landscape paintings, in which he layers painted fiber and sheer fabric above canvas in order to create a convincing optical depth that draws the community in.The scenes in these works appear to be in the process of either disappearing and taking form, capturing a between a moment in time and space. Using chipboard, styrofoam, charcoal drawing, resin, pigment, cotton wool, aluminum fiber and wire, Kurtoğlu has for the last five years worked on developing new paths and an unique visual language in his practice. He is interested in the presence that each work creates, which is further enhanced by his paintings’ powerful tactile qualities.
